I photographed a crumpled piece of fabric up close. I was interested in the soft curves of the folds and the shadows between them. As I lit the fabric, some details appeared while others faded into the dark.
I tried different light positions and watched the fine pattern of the weave. The threads were clear in the bright areas. In the deeper folds, I could mostly follow the shapes. A small adjustment created a new curve and changed the whole picture.
These shapes curving into the light reminded me of a distant galaxy. I enjoyed that thought while holding a simple piece of fabric. I chose a detail where the fine threads were still visible, but the edges of the folds slowly disappeared into shadow.
